The world of Minecraft comes to life on the big screen with the planned live-action film adaptation of the video game Minecraft. Warner Bros/Vertigo/Legendary, in collaboration with Mojang/Microsoft, is set to begin production on this highly anticipated film, which will also star Jason Momoa.
The latest addition to the cast is Jack Black, a veteran actor, comedian and musician, who is set to play the iconic character of Steve. So it seems that rumors that Pedro Pascal would play the role were wrong. This isn’t Black’s first foray into the world of video game adaptations, having previously played Bowser in Illumination and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros Movie”, the second highest-grossing film of 2023 with worldwide box-office receipts of $1.36 billion.
The plot of the Minecraft movie remains shrouded in mystery, as do the details of the screenplay. However, with a cast that also includes Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, expectations are high.
Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time with 300 million copies sold and almost 140 million monthly active players, promises a captivating film adaptation. The film is co-produced by Vertigo, Legendary, Mojang/Microsoft and Momoa’s On the Roam, under the direction of director Jared Hess.
As we await the start of shooting in New Zealand and the film’s release in April 2025, Jack Black continues to shine on screen and on stage. He has been announced for Lionsgate’s film about the video game Borderlands, due in August, and will be touring Europe with his band Tenacious D. With such a diverse career and undeniable talent, Black brings an added dimension to this exciting project.
