What is Minecraft ?

Minecraft is a sandbox-style construction game that allows players to create their own world with blocks, a bit like Lego! It can be played both in single-player and multiplayer (on a server) and offers four different game modes : Creative Mode, Survival Mode, Adventure and Hardcore.

The game was created by one man: Markus Persson "Notch". As Minecraft gained popularity, Notch founded a company called Mojang, which now develops the game with Jens "Jeb" Bergensten as the new lead developer of Minecraft. The first official version was released on November 18, 2011. In 2014, Mojang (and thus Minecraft) is bought by Microsoft for 2 billion euros.

The PC (Windows) / Mac version of Minecraft offers full support for third-party code modification and thousands of user-created mods, texture packs, maps and skins can be downloaded and used.

Minecraft is one of the most played independent games of all time, with millions of users on multiple platforms logging on to play it every month. It is available on PC / Mac and has sold over 30 million copies to date. It is also available in Minecraft Pocket Edition format (Bedrock Edition now) available on Android and iOS, which has also sold more than 30 million copies. More than 112 million people play it every month!

On May 9, 2012, Minecraft was also released on Xbox 360, selling 400,000 copies in the first 24 hours and breaking new sales records on the Xbox Live Arcade. It was developed by 4J Studios. It is also available on the Playstation, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Wii consoles under the name Minecraft Bedrock Edition.

Every year the Minecraft Live (formerly Minecon Live) is held, an official event at which new creatures or monsters that will appear in future versions of the famous game can be discovered.
